Media conglomerate Rogers Communications has launched a shot across the bow of the broadcasting landscape in a $5.2-billion deal for the right to broadcast NHL games across Canada for the next 12 years.

The deal, announced Tuesday, goes from 2014 to mid-2026, and is groundbreaking in its scope. It's the first time a major North American sport has sold exclusive national broadcast rights to a single entity, Rogers Media president Keith Pelley noted at a press conference Tuesday morning.

Looking at the stats I'm not too sure if Rogers will make money off this deal. I believe Rogers will lose a great deal of money because they paid a lot more than the

Sen. Mike Duffy charged Monday that the Conservative Party of Canada paid his $13,560 legal bill as part of orchestrated effort to make the controversy over his living expenses go away.

The prime minister’s office is already under fire after it was revealed that Stephen Harper’s chief of staff Nigel Wright cut a $90,000 personal cheque to Duffy to repay improperly claimed living costs.

But speaking in the Senate chamber Monday, Duffy said that Conservative party lawyer Arthur Hamilton arranged to have his legal costs covered as well.

Comments
There have been too many scandals surrounding Stephen Harper. It says in the article that, "Duffy also alleged that the prime minister’s office gave him a script to lie about where the money came from, claiming that he had taken out a loan." That doesn't sound like a very reliable Prime Minister to me.

Frank Beban, one of British Columbia’s leading timber baron’s, built his mansion on 160 acres of rolling farmland three miles north of Nanaimo. Prior to becoming the Nanaimo Tourism building, the main floor served as a daycare centre. The operator of the facility often heard stories from preschoolers about an oddly dressed child playing with a red rubber ball. Many of the children made their “invisible playmate” the subject of their drawings and the operator was struck by the similarity of the pictures.

It was first thought that the ghost was a little girl. It was later realized that it is more likely one of the Beban’s Chinese servants – a young boy who died in the house. The house is still believed to be home to many spirits and several staff members have reported bizarre encounters.

Beban House is one of Vancouver Island’s most well-known hauntings, which was even featured on the television series Creepy Canada.

Demonstrations to protest shale gas exploration on native lands near Rexton, New Brunswick, had been mounting for months, and when the RCMP moved in to take down the Mikmaq Elsipogtog tribe’s barriers, it was hardly surprising that the standoff became violent, starting with demonstrators throwing rocks, bottles and paint, and, when Chief Arren Sock was arrested, setting fire to six police cars. At least 40 people were arrested Thursday for violating a court-order injunction and disturbing the peace.

Chief Sock stated, “Prime Minister Harper and the Canadian government have washed their hands with regards to the environmental protection of our lands and waters.”

Comments
I believe the needs of the First Nations would be met easier without the involvement of violence. Fracking is bad for the environment because there are hundreds of harmful contaminants being put in to the ground. I'd say I am also "Anti-Fracking" but there should be a better way to go about the situation.

House Republican leaders floated a plan to fellow Republicans Tuesday to counter an emerging Senate deal to reopen the government and forestall an economy-rattling default on U.S. obligations — but the plan got mixed reviews from the rank and file and was quickly dismissed by Democrats and the White House.

The measure would suspend a new tax on medical devices for two years and take away the federal government's contributions to lawmakers' health care and top administration officials. It would also fund the government through Jan. 15 and give Treasury the ability to borrow normally through Feb. 7.

Comments
I believe if they don't make more changes with Obamacare the Republicans still wont be satisfied enough to accept this new plan. The way that things are looking it doesn't seem like they Democrats and Republicans will be able to agree on a plan and meet this deadline.

The U.S. government could close its doors Tuesday if Congress can’t reach a deal on a temporary spending budget bill, and that would jeopardize the paycheques of more than 800,000 Americans, as well as the country’s economic recovery.

It's political bickering between Democrats and Republicans in both the Senate and the House of Representatives, along with Republican in-fighting, that has brought the country to the brink of a shutdown yet again.

The battle started with a House vote to pass the short-term funding bill with a provision that would have eliminated the federal dollars needed to put President Barack Obama's health care overhaul into place.

Comments
I believe that health care for everyone is a great idea and Obama should not give in to the Republicans ideological demands. The Democrats and Repubicans will not agree on this budget bills resulting in the shutdown of the U.S. Government.

Kenya's national police service said today officers have regained control of the mall in Nairobi where al-Qaeda-linked militants launched a savage attack Saturday, killing a reported 62 people, including two Canadians.

Started at around noon Saturday. Was reported Monday at about 2 p.m. local time, black smoke was rising from the upscale shopping mall (Nairobi is seven hours ahead of Eastern Time). Police tweeted that more than 200 civilians had been rescued and more than 10 people arrested.

Comments
The death count is still on the rise and people are unsure about many missing loved ones. I believe they need to get the hostage situation under control so that no more innocent lives are taken. As I read they are in the final stages of ending this stand off and the death toll should be finalized very soon.

A United Nations report released Monday confirmed that rockets loaded with sarin gas were used in an August 21 attack in Syria, although inspectors stopped short of saying who was responsible for the attack.

Secretary of State John Kerry announced on September 1st that hair and blood samples collected from the site by first responders tested positive for signatures of sarin gas,  a man-made chemical warfare agent that interferes with nerve signals to the muscles.

Comments
There is overwhelming evidence that Assad used chemical weapons on his own people. I believe there should be repercussions for his actions. The United Nations should be able to charge the Assad government for the use of chemical weaponry.
